This past saturday was Abington THON’s 12 hour dance marathon, Stand up FTK and it was a blast! I was going to try to blog from the event but there was so much going on that I didn’t want to take out my computer and be involved in something else. Around 5AM volunteers started piling into the Lares building to do some final set up and check in the dancers. Soon enough, it was 5:59 and the countdown began, 10, 9, 8, 7, 5, 6, 4, 3, 2, 1 – STAND. From then on, all of the dancers would be standing up until 6PM. Throughout the day there were performances, demonstrations, a male fashion show, crafts, and lots of dancing! The theme was “Hershey’s Heroes” so for the fashion show we got to see Batman & Robin, Ironman, Mr. Fantastic and more! We also got to debut the second Abington line dance! The line dance was done a bunch of times throughout the event, and the lyrics featured different things that have happened in the past year throughout the world. Powderpuff finals also happened during the day, so congrats to Victorious Secret for their second championship win!
Towards the end of the event one of Abington’s THON families, the Chapman’s, told their story. No matter how many times I hear it, I’m always so inspired by the strength the entire family had while Gab was going through all of her treatments and operations. Gab is now 6 years cancer free and having her and the rest of the family with us all 12 hours was so great and really helped motivate people to keep going.
During THON weekend up at university park, towards the end they go through different line dances from past years so we decided to keep that tradition going at our marathon! Around 5PM, the 2012 THON exec board gathered on stage to showcase the first Abington line dance, and it was one of my favorite parts. Our exec board from last year was, and still is very close so getting to have that moment meant a lot of us.
This was such a huge event and could not have happened without all the volunteers. So of course, a huge thank you goes out to them and of course to lion productions because what’s a dance marathon without music?
